Opportunities for Graduate Study in the Department of Botany at Berkeley

Application forms may be obtained from the Graduate Secretary Department of Botany,University of California,Berkeley California 94720.The application for admission to the Graduate Division,together with a set of official transcripts,is to be sent to the Graduate Admissions Fellowship Office,Graduate Division,1 California Hall University of California Berkeley,California 9470.Departmental application materials(all three letters of recommendation,a second set of transcripts [Xerox copies acceptable for the Department]. GRE scores,and Departmental Application Form)must be received by the Graduate Secretary of the Department of Botany NO LATER THAN FEBRUARY l0.1987—otherwise your application will not be considered.

Fellowships Currently Carry Stipends up to $5,300(in addition to resident registration fees)will some exceptions,and are tax exempt. Completed applications,including all supporting information,must be received by the respective Graduate Division and department Offices NO LATER THAN JANUARY l0,1987. Students with outstanding records are urged to apply for these fellowships as well as those awarded by other agencies,such as the National Science Foundation.Teaching Assistantships Currently pay $10,062 for one year;they are renewable upon satisfactory performance.

Fees.The current l986-1987 fees per semester for graduate students on the Berkeley campus are $703. Nonresidents of California must pay an additional $2043 per semester. However both fees are generally paid for most fellowship holders,and a very limited number of nonresident tuition scholarships are available for nonresident students with s minimum scholarship record of 3.5. Assessed fees are payable in full at the time of registration.Fees are subject to change for the 1987-1988 academic year.

The faculty invites interested students to write to them personally for any information in relation to preparation for graduate studies.

Preparation for Graduate Study—Students planning to study for the Doctor of Philosophy under members of the faculty on the Department of Botany at Berkeley are encouraged to include in their undergraduate programs the following subjects. General botany and zoology or biology,plant ecology,plant morphology or anatomy,plant systematics or taxonomy,plant physiology genetics,general and organic chemistry,calculus,physics and firm foundation in at least one language(German French or Russian),those students anticipating graduate work on the physiological aspects of plant science should include,in addition to the above,a grounding in thermodynamics and physical chemistry,Minor deficiencies in the above subject areas may be filled after admission to the Graduate Division.

The Botany Department has adopted an Affirmative Action program with regard to graduate student admissions and it actively encourages admission of minority student into its programs,as part of the Graduate Division,the Graduate Minority Program administers a number of fellowships that are awarded to minority graduate students on the basis of need,an student seeking entrance to the Botany Department are urged to apply for them.
